چکیده

Abstract A significant part of the existing building stock in regions low to moderate seismic hazard has been designed without modern considerations and is, meantime, exceeding its design life span. The assessment performance poses an engineering challenge, due unknown material properties, undocumented structural interventions scarcity event-based information. Operational modal analysis applied some cases verify model assumptions beyond visual inspection. However, masonry buildings exhibit amplitude-dependent stiffness even at very response amplitudes, raising questions about validity such methods. Planned demolitions provide engineers with opportunity leverage higher-amplitude vibrations generated during demolition activities better understand dynamic behaviour buildings. This paper introduces a Bayesian model-updating framework, which aims reducing uncertainty analysis, by fusing measurements best-practice models. proposed hybrid framework is nine real buildings, representative residential as typically encountered Switzerland, that have monitored controlled demolition. vast reduction prediction achieved through data-driven updating, additionally exposing intra- inter-typological differences terms capacity ductility. In addition, between updated predictions typical generic typological curves are discussed. Overall, this contribution demonstrates, applies discusses practical benefits straightforward methodology for monitoring data into evaluation structures.

Uncertainty in Seismic Capacity of Masonry Buildings

Seismic assessment of masonry structures is plagued by both inherent randomness and model uncertainty. The former is referred to as aleatory uncertainty, the latter as epistemic uncertainty because it depends on the knowledge level. Pioneering studies on reinforced concrete buildings have revealed a significant influence of modeling parameters on seismic vulnerability. However, confidence in me...

Simplified indexes for the seismic vulnerability of ancient masonry buildings

This paper presents a contribution for the safety assessment of historical masonry buildings under seismic loading. Three different simplified safety indexes (in-plan area ratio, area to weight ratio and base shear ratio) are analyzed, taking into account a large sample of fifty-eight Portuguese churches. The sample of building has been organized according to the seismic zonation, from high to ...

Influence of initial spatial layout on seismic behavior of masonry buildings with curved roof systems

Early design decisions made on building configuration and spatial design affect seismic behavior of buildings. Therefore introducing design guidelines and empirical methods implemented to assess seismic behavior of buildings have been proposed as an appropriate approach. Such concept helps architects to take into the consideration that how their preliminary design decisions influence downstream...

Seismic Design of Box-Type Unreinforced Masonry Buildings Through Direct Displacement-Based Approach

In the last decade, displacement-based seismic design procedures have been recognised to be effective alternatives to force-based design (FBD) methods. Indeed, displacement based design (DBD) may allow the structural engineer to get more realistic predictions of local and global deformations of the structure, and hence damage, under design earthquakes. This facilitates the achievement of perfor...

Influence of Masonry Infills Walls on the Seismic Behaviour of Multi-storey Waffle Slabs Rc Buildings

In this work, we analyze the influence of masonry infill walls on the seismic performance of waffle slabs reinforced concrete (RC) framed structures. We analyze buildings of three, five and eight storeys, which are representative for a big number of housings in Barcelona, Spain. Capacity spectra have been obtained by performing pushover analyses and we have used a simplified procedure to obtain...
